May’s Theme: Diet Diversity

Hasn’t this weather been wonderful? Everyone’s mood improves with blue skies and sunshine. I’ve been loving taking my morning coffee out to the garden and listening to the wee birds singing their hearts out! Going outside first thing is a great habit to get into. Sunshine or natural light in our eyes sets up our circadian rhythm in a positive way for the day!

I also have my wee rebounder outside so am taking time to bounce for 5 minutes or whenever I walk past it! Did you know that even 5 minutes of gentle bouncing, dancing or walking after a meal will reduce the glucose spike? Our body will then use some of the glucose from the meal to fuel our muscles meaning less gets stored as fat!

April was a holiday month for me with my annual trip to Iona with my pals, and a bonus 3 days in Mull with my eldest daughter Emma, who is working there this season.

I caught up with my wee pal Angela, 81 years old, still travelling independently (without a mobile phone) but always with her beloved violin. She broke her shoulder in 3 places last year and was told she’d never play again, but through sheer determination, one step at a time, she is back playing as beautifully as ever!

What an inspiration to us all, she is living her best life, sharp as a tack and full of the joys of life. The human body is miraculous, what we believe, we can create, the power of the mind can heal the body, how cool is that!?

So onto the merry month of May, starting strong with glorious sunshine! My mum always said Don’t cast a clout till May is out, but I am wearing shorts and t shirts and my clout is well cast out!

We are returning to the most important topic of diversity this month. Current recommendations are to eat 30 different types of fibre per week for optimal gut health.

Like everyone else I go through phases of eating the same thing a few days in a row. Even if it’s healthy choices, our wee gut buddies still need variety.

We sometimes just need reminded, which is what this group is all about. It’s too easy to fall back into bad habits then our health suffers.

The diet diversity game is great fun, it’s really the only game I can consistently win!

Ferments count as double points and our wild plants are a brilliant way of getting those diversity points in.

My fermenty fridge is well stocked up with ferments in all the colours of the rainbow. I really miss ferments when I go on holiday. I just feel like the best version of myself when I’m eating them regularly!

I’ll be setting up a diversity challenge over in the FB group from Monday, and will be on the group live at 8pm to talk about all the ways we can easily increase the diversity in our diets, through simple swaps and additions.

Exciting news, I have now sold almost 750 copies of my wee fermenting e book!

Here is the link if you’d like to buy it!

In good health
